FHA Secure Has Been A Flop!

WASHINGTON, Dec 17 (Reuters) - A program unveiled by U.S. President George W. Bush in August that is trying to save tens of thousands of homeowners from foreclosure has aided just 266 borrowers so far, according to government data released on Monday.

The initiative, which helps high-risk or low-income borrowers win better loan terms by insuring mortgage payments, targets recent homeowners whose loans have a built-in interest-rate spike that made them miss a payment.

Did securitization work?

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Securitization, hailed as the greatest financial innovation of the 20th century, isn’t getting such rave reviews anymore after this summer’s subprime mortgage crisis exposed some weaknesses. With global credit markets still in crisis, experts have already begun debating the benefits and the drawbacks of the process.

NovaStar Mortgage exits wholesale lending

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 17 - As we disclosed previously, the tighter guidelines and adjusted pricing we have adopted will reduce loan originations until the secondary market shows signs of normalizing. This reduction in force includes stepping back temporarily from pursuing new loans in the wholesale market, a decision we are also seeing among some of our peer companies. For now, we believe this is the right thing to do economically. Our retail channel will be the dominant source of new loans in the coming months. We will follow through on the funding of loans already approved through the wholesale channel."

National City & Aegis Stop taking mortgage applications

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Units of Cerberus Capital Management LP and National City Corp. stopped taking home loan applications on Monday, becoming the latest to be hit by turmoil in the mortgage market.
Aegis Mortgage Corp., a mortgage lender that’s part-owned by private-equity firm Cerberus, suspended all loan originations on Monday. Aegis also is unable to fund home loans that are already in its pipeline, spokeswoman Pat Wente said.
