Mortgage Applications Drop 5.5%

Rising interest rates led to the volume of mortgage applications declining 5.5% last week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. The purchase application index declined 4.7% and the refinancing index dipped 6.6%, to its the second-lowest point this year. The average interest rate on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages dropped three basis points to 6.5%, after hitting a near-four-year-high last week. The average rate on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages increased two basis points to 6.17%. Rates on one-year adjustable-rate mortgages increased one basis point to 5.97%.
